Tor's interview with OzDressage

Queensland’s Tor Van Den Berge has told ozdressage it is unlikely he will contest WEG selection this year.
Handing over the reins to his wife Melissa on the Grand Prix mount Fisherman’s Friend (Fabriano x Pik Solo), Van Den Berge says that although it’s not out of the question for his other superstar stallion, Lauries As (Londonderry x Pik Bube), time might be against them.
“Fish has been a great horse for me but I have now handed the reins over to my wife Mel to get some experience at Grand Prix,” he said.
“We’ll let Ace (Lauries As) tell us if he’s ready or not. He’s such a talented young horse so we don’t want to make a mistake by pushing him too quickly,” Van Den Berge said.
Van Den Berge will make the 1700km+ trip from his base in Beaudesert to compete at Boneo Park CDI later this month with a strong team that includes Lauries As, Grand Prix mare Donna Bonita (for sale), medium horse Cougar V and medium/advanced mare Lady Sinatra.
For Lauries As, Van Den Berge says the long term goal is Rio 2016.
“If Ace comes out at Grand Prix and is happy and solid with the work then we might, but I think we are running a bit short of time now, so we’ll be focusing on Rio. We will be doing time in Europe in the lead up to Rio,” Van Den Berge confirmed.
“Our aim is for Lauries As to make the team for Rio.”
Giving Van Den Berge a better idea as to his mounts suitability will be results from his planned schedule for 2014 which includes Boneo Park, Dressage with Altitude CDI in Orange, Sydney CDI and possibly another run before Sydney at Dressage With The Stars in March.
Van Den Berge said that unfortunately the commercial reality of running a business is also a factor to consider for his team.
“I guess the biggest factor is money. We made the decision to leave Fish at home before London as he was still green at the level, so we are in the same position here with Lauries As,” he said.
“If we had the money we might take him over for the lead up and see how we went, but unfortunately that’s not the case. If he scores really well at the lead up comps then we will have to see what we can do to get the money together, but our main aim will be Rio.”
Although the aim might be Rio, we have a feeling there’s plenty of support in the dressage community ready to help this exciting pair make a run for WEG selection if they change their mind!
